Why isn't my business showing up on Google?

Almost always one of four things, and they need completely different fixes. Working out which one is yours takes about ten minutes.

1. You are checking from the wrong place

Search results for anything local are shaped by where the searcher is standing. Sitting in your own shop and searching your trade will show you results tuned to that exact spot, and often your own browsing history on top.

Check in a private window, and check from a different part of town. If you appear from two streets away and not from across the city, you are ranking. You are just ranking in a small circle.

2. You have no Google Business Profile, or it is incomplete

For anything local, the map pack sits above every organic result. If you are not in it, most people never scroll far enough to find you.

That block is driven by your Business Profile, not your website: your categories, your hours, your photos, your reviews and how close you are to whoever is searching. A profile that is unclaimed, missing its primary category, or has four reviews when the shop up the road has ninety, will not appear.

This is free to fix and it is the single highest-leverage thing most local businesses can do.

3. Your pages have nothing on them to rank

This is the one nobody can see, and it is the most common.

A search engine discounts anything that repeats across your whole site. Your navigation, your footer, your header. What is left is what it actually credits the page for.

Strip that chrome away on a typical local site and the average page has fewer than fifty words of its own. There is nothing there to match a search against. The site looks complete because a person sees the design, the logo and the photos. Google sees the words.

The fix is genuinely writing the pages: one for each service, in the language customers use, long enough to answer the question they arrived with.

4. Google cannot tell what you do or where you do it

Structured data is a small block of machine-readable markup that states plainly what kind of business you are, where you operate, your hours and your services.

Without it, Google is inferring all of that from your page copy, and increasingly so is ChatGPT, which is now where a growing share of these searches start. When an assistant recommends a competitor instead of you, that is usually why. It was not choosing. It was guessing from what it could scrape.

How to tell which one is yours

In order, because each is cheap to check:

  • Search in a private window from a different part of town. Still nothing? Keep going.
  • Search your business name exactly. If nothing appears, it is a Business Profile problem.
  • Open your busiest service page and read it with the header and footer covered. Under a hundred words of its own? That is a content problem.
  • If all three look fine, it is likely competitive difficulty, and the answer is more depth than whoever is above you.
Quick answers
Why isn't my business showing up on Google?
Usually one of four things: you have no Google Business Profile, your pages have too little content to rank, Google cannot tell what you do or where, or you are searching from a location where you were never going to appear.
How long does it take to show up on Google?
A new Google Business Profile can appear in the map pack within days of verification. Organic rankings for competitive terms usually take two to six months of consistent content, and longer in a crowded market.
Does having a website help me rank on Google Maps?
Yes, but indirectly. The map pack is driven mostly by your Business Profile, reviews and proximity to the searcher. A site with real service pages supports it and is what ranks in the normal results underneath.

If you would rather not work through that by hand, I will crawl every page you have and measure exactly what a search engine credits you for. Free, about two minutes to start.
